How to call a legislator

Please remember, public officials expect to get calls from the public. They rely on these calls and letters to help them make the best decisions.

Tips for calling a legislator
  • Prepare for the call. Write down your story; your talking points and what you would like the official to do.
  • Identify yourself - give your name, where you live and why you are calling.
  • Ask for the official. You will likely get an aide. If the official is unavailable, talk with the aide.
  • Tell your story. Be polite, courteous and respectful of their time.
  • Always remember to ask for the action you want (i.e. support the SAFE for Salmon bill)
  • Say your piece, then listen. Don't interrupt or argue.
  • If they want more information, let them know that you will get it to them.
  • If they have questions you cannot answer, say so. Then get the answer and call them back with it.
  • Finish the call by thanking them for their time and their support if they are supportive. If they are noncommittal, urge them again to please support SAFE for Salmon.
  • If you get an answering machine - leave a message with the issue you are calling about, your name, number and the best times to reach you.
  • Don't be discouraged if they haven't returned your call in a few days, just call back.

    How to write a legislator

Letters are an extremely important tool in advocacy. Just a few can make a huge impact! Legislators frequently rely on letters, emails and telephone calls to help decide how they will vote. Letters and emails are one of the best ways to communicate your message.

  • You don't have to be an expert, just explain your point of view.
