Tips for writing to the editor
Make your letter local and personal. Relate the topic to something that happened in your community. Use personal examples.
Keep it short. Most papers accept letters up to 250 words, but 150 is better. If you can say it in one witty sentence, your odds of getting published are even better.
Relate it to SAFE for Salmon. Relate your letter to a recent event that has impacted the campaign or (i.e. your state representative has just come out in support of the bill).
Keep your focus. Limit your letter to one or two points, and put the most important point in the first paragraph.
Include your name, address, and telephone number. Most papers will check with you before printing the letter to make sure you're who you say you are.
Keep writing. If you don't get your first letter published, don't get discouraged. Send in another one.
